Oxygen gives the athlete stamina, helps the injured heal, and protects us from environmental toxins

ALL ABOUT OXYGEN

What is the one thing we simply can not live without? Oxygen. What is the very first and the very last act of life? Breath. How long can we go without oxygen before it harms our health? Four minutes.

If you are at sea level, there is 21% oxygen in the air. The rest of the air is mostly nitrogen, and in cities, there are also pollutant gasses including carbon monoxide. Oxygen is kind of a big deal. Energy consist of 2 things: the food we eat + oxygen = ATP (energy) Without oxygen, you would not be able to make ATP, your cellular energy currency. Without oxygen, ATP (energy) stores drop quickly. In short, lack of oxygen lead to degeneration attributing to illness, ageing and eventually death.

Red blood cells (RBC) are the cells that carry oxygen throughout the body which keeps us healthy, fights disease, repairs injury and slows the ageing process.

There are two ways to increase oxygen-carrying capacity:

Increase the number of RBCs in circulation with hyperbaric oxygen therapy or illegal blood doping transfusions. Yes, that’s right these are the only 2 ways to increase your red blood cell capacity. HBOT diffuses more oxygen into the plasma or the liquid of the blood by using pressure and increasing oxygen intake.

UNDERSTANDING PRESSURE

Sea level pressure is defined as 1 ATA (atmosphere absolute). The deeper you dive beneath the surface of the sea, the more pressure that is created because water is very heavy. You can simulate this heaviness in a hyperbaric chamber and take advantage of Henry’s Law, a physics law that states that the more pressure that is exerted on a gas, the more that gas will go from gaseous to liquid form.

In a hyperbaric chamber, as the oxygen concentration inhaled is increased and combined with increased atmospheric pressure, 1200% or more oxygen can be driven into circulation. HBOT infuses massive amounts of unbound liquid oxygen directly into the plasma or liquid of your blood. The plasma has very little oxygen in it at sea level but it has massive oxygen-carrying potential. The only way to infuse it with oxygen is by increasing atmospheric pressure.

WHAT IS MILD HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY (mHBOT)?

mHBOT is a method of delivering extra oxygen into the body at a pressure between 1.3 and 1.5 ATA. Once at this depth (1.35 ATA in our case), 100% oxygen is administered with an oxygen concentrating mask for the full duration of the treatment, which normally lasts for 30 to 60 minutes per session.

To keep it simple. More oxygen means more energy for brain function, heart, liver, immune system etc. Think of it like an “oxygen supplement” whereby the chamber is used to provide a physiological increase in the amount of oxygen that passes into your body from your lungs every time you breathe and every time your heart beats.

Oxygen is essential for life and we are constantly dependent on this nutrient for our entire life and for optimal health.

WHAT IS mHBOT USED FOR?

More and more studies are coming out all the time and mHBOT is becoming more recognised as a very powerful addition to help people heal and prevent disease.

 GENERAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS

mHBOT is becoming more popularised for the physiological and energetic support being achieved from the surplus levels of oxygen created when breathing in a hyperbaric environment. Our mild HBOT can help you achieve optimal wellness for longevity and recovery from any of the above ailments. More and more studies are showing that mild oxygen therapy in a chamber is so beneficial for most of the population.

HOW MUCH PRESSURE IS ENOUGH?

Our soft chamber is 1.35 ATA while some hospitals use 2 ATA. Lower pressure protocols at 1.3 to 1.5 ATA can effectively deliver these higher levels of oxygen, without the risks associated with high pressure (2.0+). The added pressure allows extra oxygen to be absorbed and transferred from the lungs into the blood, causing a greater saturation of blood oxygen levels. As this rich oxygenated blood makes its way to damaged tissue, extra oxygen is now readily available and can be potentially utilised for enhancing tissue repair and regeneration while also still being able to provide its potent anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects.

100% OXYGEN

Hyperbaric oxygen is defined as breathing 100% oxygen under pressure. Normal air at sea level is 21% oxygen, and when you breathe it under pressure inside the chamber, more oxygen will get transferred into the body. More importantly, the extra oxygen enters the blood plasma (liquid) and gets oxygen into much deeper areas (i.e., where inflammation impedes blood flow) and in places where red blood cells cannot normally reach. This is a great technique to achieve greater levels of oxygen. We provide users with an oxygen mask or nasal cannula which provides 95% oxygen intake and we recommend this approach for oxygen saturation benefits at a cellular level.

WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED SCHEDULE?

As with all health care services, we cater to the individual needs and no one person is like the next. We have a range of packages available for mHBOT so that we can help you achieve the greatest benefits for your body. The gold standard of care for healing is 20 – 40 sessions with a 2 – 3 day per week schedule to begin with. This is highly recommended for people suffering from any of the listed health concerns. Following 40 sessions, you may re-evaluate for discernible benefits before proceeding.

As a health supplement, we recommend it as an addition to your weekly routine to avoid illness and help prevent degeneration associated with ageing and some people will choose to take up 1 session per week to stay healthy.

HOW LONG DOES EACH SESSION LAST?

Hyperbaric sessions are typically 60 minutes but can vary from 30 – 60 minutes depending on the persons needs.

HOW DOES IT FEEL?

The pressure feels like the pressure that you feel in your ears when you are flying in an airplane. The feeling abates once the chamber is fully pressurised for most people. If you struggle with discomfort our staff are on hand to regulate the pressure and allow you to adjust slowly with some simple techniques.

AFTER EFFECTS OF mHBOT

The first 5 sessions or so can leave you feeling sleepy by the end of the day. This is because mHBOT activates the sympathetic nervous system which is our healing system and just like when we are recovering from illness our body wants to sleep, mHBOT can make us fall in to a deep sleep when we go to bed as it turns on our healing process.

Once your body has healed from any stress, illness or injury, mHBOT will give you energy because it is helping you produce energy.

So, depending on your circumstances and whether you are currently suffering an illness or injury and your body needs the oxygen to recover or whether you are at optimal health levels and your body is utilising the oxygen to produce more energy will depend on how you feel.

Long term mHBOT will improve brain function, cellular detoxification, blood vessel regeneration and slow down the ageing process.

Personally I have found that regular mHBOT has improved my sleep and I fall into a deeper sleep with more ease while giving me more energy during the day, better clarity and less brain fog allowing my days to be more productive and my nights to be more restful. The uptick in energy and cognition helps me make better choices for my overall health and as a result I feel in better shape now than I did before mHBOT… a win win for my overall function and health.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS, CONTRAINDICATIONS, AND AREAS OF CONCERN?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is very simple, non-invasive, and safe procedure. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has demonstrated excellent safety records and generally is an extremely safe procedure. Serious adverse reactions are very rare, and generally not seen at lower dosages which is why we have chosen a mild dose chamber for our clients safety and security.

Þ Untreated Pneumothorax: The only absolute contraindication for hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an ‘untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung)’. Anyone needing to enter a hyperbaric chamber with an untreated pneumothorax needs to have a chest tube inserted and evaluated by a medical practitioner before entering a hyperbaric chamber.

MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

Þ  Ear/Sinus discomfort: This occurs in about 10% of the population during the hyperbaric pressurisation period. We will teach you how to release the pressure in your ears as the chamber changes pressure, similar to what we experience in an aeroplane during take off and landing.

Þ  Claustrophobia: Since you are in a closed environment, claustrophobia may occur. Once the chamber fills with air there is actually enough space to comfortably lay down or sit up and move around.
