3 Reasons to Choose (or not) Online Pilates Teacher Training

Welcome to the vibrant world of Pilates instruction, a space where every movement is intentional, breaths are as essential as the air inhaled, and your expertise as an instructor holds the power to transform lives. Whether you're about to dip your toes into the rewarding waters of Pilates teacher training or are already wading through certification programs, the debate of online versus in-person learning has likely crossed your mind.

But today, we aren't just weighing pros and cons; we're lighting the path to your career by exploring why (or why not) online Pilates teacher training could be your best bet (or your greatest regret) and why you might be missing out and causing yourself a dis-service in your own learning by choosing an online training program.

Upholding the Pilates Tradition in the Digital Era

Pilates is a discipline steeped in tradition, emphasizing the unity of body, mind, and spirit. Joseph Pilates, the founder, envisioned a holistic approach to physical wellness that endures beyond trends and technologies. There is no doubt that learning online is the 'new way' of learning, but, I do want you to realise that Pilates is a body movement practice and we simply can not understand the body in it's entirety on a screen since the body in it's entirety is 4 dimensional - 3 dimensions of movement PLUS the dimension of emotions which can only be realised in the flesh, and simply can not be experienced on a screen but must be felt between you and the person you are serving in the flesh. So with this is mind, how can a student possibly learn how to feel into their own body, into their practice of instruction without experiencing the very real emotion that happens in the room, face to face in the teaching and experiencing of movement?

Bridging Geographic Barriers

Imagine a student striving to master Pilates, whether in the vastness of rural America or amidst the lively streets of urban Asia. Across any backdrop, online platforms democratise education, granting access to Pilates programs for individuals worldwide. In this digital realm, geographical barriers no longer impede the pursuit of excellence, rendering the dream of becoming a Pilates teacher achievable for all.

Undoubtedly, online learning broadens the scope for prospective Pilates professionals. Personally, as a resident of a remote area devoid of Pilates opportunities during my student years, I faced challenges unlike those in regions with established training facilities. Perhaps this placed me at a disadvantage compared to peers with easier access to such resources. However, my commitment to learning drove me to travel extensively for training, solidifying my determination to pursue my desired path.

Living remotely could have been perceived as a barrier to becoming a Pilates instructor due to the need for frequent travel. Yet, I viewed this as an opportunity to fill a void in my town's movement landscape. The key lies in mindset—whether one sees travel as an obstacle or a chance for growth. It is never a setback; rather, it may serve as a mere excuse, so what story are you telling yourself and is it actually the truth?

In other words, you get to decide your future, not your circumstances.

Flexibility That Mimics the Dynamic Nature of Pilates

The appeal of online Pilates teacher training seems boundless, yet the reality is like an overstretched hamstring, just waiting for the tension to release but not knowing exactly how to approach the misuse of what seemed at first like an appropriate choice. The nature of the body is that it is dynamic, changeable, emerging and reemerging with every single expereince, none the same as the last and never in line with the linear goal. Unlike a computer, the body is divergent, contradictory and unplanned, as in nature we merge with our experiences and never stay the same, something that can not be judiciously studied on the screen. For this reason, I believe we are doing our students a dis-service in offering only online Pilates teacher training. As part of the learning journey, face-to-face instruction is crucial to observe students' movements and make adjustments accordingly. Additionally, being present in a physical classroom allows for real-time interaction between instructors and peers, creating an enriched learning experience that cannot be replicated through a

The Tech-Enriched Workshop

Online Pilates platforms have evolved beyond mere instructional videos. They now incorporate cutting-edge technologies, including live webinars, virtual classrooms, and even artificial intelligence-led assessments, ensuring a multi-dimensional learning experience. It's a seamless fusion of age-old Pilates principles with contemporary tech tools that promises a comprehensive and engaging pedagogy.

Honing Your Craft Safely and Efficiently

Your eagerness to refine your craft deserves a safe and efficient learning environment. Online Pilates teacher training does not provide that, there is no embedding your educational voyage with paramount value and care. You are left to your own devises, assumed to be doing it 'right' when in fact how would you know what you don't already know? It is crucial to remember that Pilates is ultimately a discipline of physical movement, and without proper guidance and observation, you risk forming incorrect habits or even injuring yourself. In-person training offers the opportunity for hands-on adjustments from experienced instructors who can ensure your safety and provide valuable feedback on your technique.

The Anatomy of Virtual Instruction

To excel in Pilates, mastering anatomy is just as crucial as perfecting each movement. Online courses offer detailed modules on anatomy and physiology, utilizing digital tools for enhanced learning. Your screen transforms into a canvas of muscles, deepening your understanding of the body's mechanics. Exploring anatomy through 3D visuals and videos online allows for practical application in the real world. Are you studying anatomy as part of your certification?

Cohesive Community Building

A misconception about online learning is its solitary nature. Contrarily, well-facilitated programs nurture vibrant online Pilates communities, where virtual peers and instructors seamlessly connect through discussion forums, group tasks, and live group sessions. These virtual bonds offer a support system akin to a close-knit studio, where questions are met with encouragement and growth is celebrated collectively. But we have seen how collectivism has continued to destroy the individual essence and fabric of society and blended participants down to a dull brown husk. Online learning rarely allows for the true vulnerability it takes to fail over and over again in order to succeed and would rather celebrate 'living your best life' and achieving greatness when the best teachings are always found in failure

Mentorship in the Digital Dawn

Pilates teacher training is more than coursework; it's about mentorship. Students are paired with experienced instructors who guide them through the curriculum, providing personalized feedback and career advice. This mentorship is a beacon, illuminating the path forward in tandem with your unique aspirations and pace and can only be fostered in person.

Accessing the Cutting-Edge of Pilates

The Pilates industry, much like the human body it nurtures, is dynamic and constantly evolving. Online Pilates teacher training acts as a gateway to access the latest advancements, ensuring that you, as a budding instructor, stay not only well-informed but also innovative in your teaching approach. It serves as a valuable resource for certified instructors looking to expand and strengthen the foundations they establish through face-to-face mentorship. While I appreciate traditional methods, integrating online learning alongside personalized mentoring in the studio can greatly enhance the overall teaching experience.

Staying Ahead with Research and Innovation

Online programs have a unique advantage in integrating the latest research in Pilates methods, nutrition, and injury recovery, or so they claim. The term 'evidence-based' is often thrown around in the online realm, yet gathering evidence also involves experiential learning - observing, practicing, making mistakes, achieving, and receiving feedback. The digital platform lacks real-time updates and the tactile experience that contributes to your personal learning journey.

Remote Learning and Practical Engagement

Despite the wonderful flexibility of remote Pilates education, hands-on experience remains invaluable. Numerous online programs now facilitate internships and practical training at studios and wellness centers, offering practical immersion to enhance your theoretical understanding. A competent mentor will assist students in establishing and nurturing connections with a studio that will pave the way for success in Pilates and create opportunities for a promising future. However, not all studios are alike, and sound guidance is crucial when selecting a physical studio to practice in based on your desired outcomes.

Lifestyle Integration and Empowerment

1. Fostering Self-Regulated Learning

Online platforms give you control over your education. This self-regulated learning aligns with the philosophy of Pilates, emphasizing self-awareness and empowerment. As you guide your learning journey with discipline and independence, you embody the principles you teach.

However, what happens midway through your course when uncertainty creeps in? Doubts about your progress and abilities surface, and the authenticity of your Pilates practice comes into question. Are you truly experiencing Pilates in your movements, or merely mimicking actions like a trained monkey without understanding the essence behind them?

While self-regulation is valuable, the importance of accountability, embracing failure, and receiving constructive feedback cannot be overlooked. Pilates transcends mere exercise on a reformer; it is a transformative journey for the mind, body, and spirit, requiring precision and a deep connection to truly unlock its magic.

Consider the scenario where you step into a teaching role and the transformative magic fails to materialize. Without a solid foundation of knowledge and experience, you may find yourself at a loss. It is crucial to delve deep into the essence of Pilates to authentically share its transformative power with others and how can this possibly happen without a mentor to guide you?

2. Authentic Online Class Experience

The rise of virtual classes in today's world has been significant. So, why doesn't an online teacher training program perfectly align with this trend? The reason is simple: To effectively teach online, one must first master the art of Pilates in their own body and on many others before them. You require hands-on experience to correct movements, and you deserve the chance to practice on different bodies under the guidance of a skilled mentor in the field you aim to excel in. One thing is certain – investing in proper training is invaluable. You are more than just someone watching a screen and mimicking movements. The individuals you will teach deserve to benefit from your profound knowledge which can only be attenuated with real life experiential learning.

3. Integration with Professional Goals

Ultimately, the decision to pursue Pilates teacher training is deeply personal, often intersecting with career aspirations. For some, the dream might be to run a bustling studio in the city center; for others, it's to build an online empire that transcends borders. And for some, inviting clients in to your home and working intimately in your own private space is your ideal goal.

But ultimately, the decision to become a Pilates instructor is a decision to impact other peoples lives in a positive way and so our intention to learn must be an intention to understand what we are doing so that we can make lasting changes to the people we serve and so we must ask ourselves if we can truly understand the body in movement if we are not moving and learning from someone who does, and if we are, can we know for sure that what we are learning on a screen feels and learns the same as it would in person, and how does that transpire to the teacher we become?

Professional Development and Diverse Specializations

In summary, while the allure of online programs is undeniable, the accessibility, advanced technology, and ease of experiences seems like the perfect option for your already too busy life. But, consider yourself forewarned, convenience and ease is a trap and becoming recognised and reputable harder than you think. Don't fall for the marketing tactics that aim to strip you of your hard earned money only to realise you are not sought after. I invite you to ponder these insights as you tread a path that's more than just a profession but a lifelong pursuit of well-being and empowerment.
